This 33-page book is a representative compendium of some of the musical statements committed to relative permanence by the members of Mr Sun, mostly from their Compass recording “Extrovert”.

If you like Mr Sun’s music, there’s a pretty good chance that you play a little music yourself.
Or a lot of music. If that’s the case, you might sometimes wonder “What were they thinking on that solo?!” or maybe even, “Why?? Why play THOSE notes??!”

Well, we in the band are all drawing on a great deal of diverse artistic influences – bluegrass, jazz, geology, R&B, literature, poetry, paintings, cookbooks– and somewhere along the line, it all churns through us and comes back out as the sound that is particular to Mr Sun.

One of the more interesting features of this book is that sometimes members of the band all play over the same set of chords changes. When this happens, the solos are actually "stacked" on the page so you can compare each person's approach to the changes instantly and in detail.

With these transcriptions, you can enjoy a “Sun’s-eye view” on what we’re doing over some of the pieces we play, and maybe get a little insight into some of the inner workings of this band’s improvisational vocabulary. And you can see what the chords are!
