Look Up, Look Down © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP Black-Eyed Susans by the side of the road. Look up, look down Wavin’ in the sunlight, gold on gold… Look Up, Look Down. If I walk real steady I can sing this song. Look up, look down Sometimes the words are right and the tune is wrong…, look up, look down. (CHO) And it’s been such a long long time That I’ve been on my own It’s been such a long long road Oh but now I’m comin’ can’t keep my feet from runnin’ Oh now I’m comin’ home I woke to the song of a mournin’ dove. Look up, look down Makin’ me yearn for my own true love…Look up, look down There’s a big old hawk making’ circles in the sky. Look up, look down Can you see my baby from way up high? Look up, look down (CHO) (FIDDLE INTERLUDE) SOLOS ON FORM Now I’m a-markin’ time by the light of the moon. Look up, look down She’s a-waxin’ now but will be full soon… Look up, look down Won’t you meet me on the porch in the full moonlight? Look up, look down My arms will circle round you darlin gonna hold you tight… Look up, look down (CHO)… And I’m Coming’ home… Baby I’m runnin’ home! (FIDDLE INTERLUDE) Oh but now I’m comin’ can’t keep my feet from runnin’ Oh now I’m comin’ home Now I’m comin’ can’t keep my feet from runnin’ Oh now I’m comin’ on home.

Down In The Hollow © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP Down in the hollow, the dark, dark hollow, The air is sweet with pine There lives a little girl, a pretty little girl And I wish that girl were mine, I wish that girl were mine Down in the hollow, the dark, dark hollow, The sun can barely shine There lives a little girl, a pretty little girl And I wish that girl were mine, I wish that girl were mine But we don't need the sun to shine When she lets her love light fly Just one look from her sweet eye Sets my heart on fire (instrumentals) She's the reason old men sigh, And search their memories Nighttime brings their fondest dreams. When morning comes, they cry Down in the hollow, the dark, dark hollow Gonna get myself a home I'll ask that little girl to join me in my world And I'll never be alone… I’ll never be alone Down in the hollow, the dark, dark hollow, The air is sweet with pine There lives a little girl, a pretty little girl And you know that girl is mine. You know that girl is mine

Dancin ‘Round Your Door © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP I came home last night, put down my shoes Wo, I lay my weary body on the bed But the mem’ry of you would not leave, kept runnin’ through my head So I grabbed my shoes and coming’ back to you. (CHO) And it looks like I’ll be dancin’ round your door And it looks like I’ll be howlin’ at the moon And if I could, well you know I – I would do what it takes to make this good… …And it looks like I’ll be dancin’ round your door. At stayin’ put I’ve never been much good Oh, I never could take off these traveling’ shoes Well, I follow a path that the music leads like a moth flies ‘round a flame But the song I hear keeps calling’ out your name! (CHO) SOLOS on A; B is signal to bridge (Bridge) So keep the window open for me, darlin’ Think of me when you’re starin’ at the moon I will be back, like a gypsy with a pack & I’ll be bringin’ this ol’ wanderin’ heart to you (CHO)

The Canyon Wren -Emy Phelps (we’ll fly away, we’ll fly away, we’ll fly away) High up in the canyon wall lives a bird, a little brown wren You can hear them calling as the sun comes round And their song it rolls down the canyon Ringing off the rocks and hills Descending notes of their sweet singing Echo thru the ancient cliffs Johnny was the boss-man’s youngest son Owned the town-ruled with fear He fell in love with a migrant girl: Sweet Corinna. They would meet down in the canyon Their love songs carried on the wind They made a promise of forever At a time when such secrets couldn’t live. Word got ‘round, spread like wildfire Thru the town- it reached Johnny’s daddy. "No son of mine will live to wed any brown-skinned girl." "Oh, Johnny, you must leave this valley Go find a place we can be free Send a message and I’ll meet you...Go now, love, please" "Oh my darlin’, my Corinna... Just one more kiss & then I’ll go You know that I have always loved you, And it always will be so". John, he climbed the path to the top of the wall of the canyon A hired man with a gun in his hand was waiting there Corinna heard that shot that killed her Johnny She raised her arms up to the sky The only sound that filled the valley Was the echo of the canyon wrens cry. High up in the canyon wall lives a bird, a little brown wren You can hear them calling as the sun comes round And their song it rolls down the canyon, Ringing off the rocks and rills Descending notes of their sweet singing Echo thru the ancient hills Oh my darlin’ Corinna Now I’ll always be here When your time it comes for passing on I will meet you here we’ll fly away, we’ll fly away, we’ll fly away

Isn’t That Life. — Emy Phelps © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP Black cat sitting on a fence all day, Watching’ those little birds sing and play… Oh, oh, isn’t that livin’ . My old man left, didn’t say where. Found him in the next state with another wife there! Oh, oh, isn’t that life… Woah, oh isn’t that livin’ You do what you can and you do your best to do it right Sometimes you cut your losses and you choose to survive Oh, oh isn’t that right… Oh, isn’t that life. Well I heard the cat say to the bird, “Won’t you come a little closer, tell you what I heard.” Said the bird to the cat, ”You know I think I’ll pass, Gonna fly away, gonna save my… save my life!” CHO SOLOS-full cycle Well I found myself stuck in the same old place, feelin’ lonesome yearning for a friendly face Oh, oh isn’t that livin’ And the ground fell out from under my feet, got to find my wings, got to feel the heat Oh, oh isn’t that life Gonna catch the next train out of town. Don’t come lookin’ for me babe, I won’t be hangin’ round. Oh, oh, isn’t that livin’ Gonna be the bird, I won’t be the cat, Gonna lift my wings— whatchu think of that? Oh, oh, isn’t that life CHO and round

Something Changed Today © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP Something changed today… I thought I heard a whisper in the wind Maybe the angle of the light… movement from the shadow caught my eye I thought I saw you.. leanin’ on the edges of my sight I wish I saw you. Walkin’ down the road, almost stepped on a snake A man came up to see if it was alive Grabbed it and moved it to the side of the road “I ain’t done that in forty years; Guess I still have the touch”. I’ll still be missing you you in forty… still be yearning’ for your touch. Car pulled on the ground by the road. She said “I’m lost, can you help me find the way” I could see the worry in her eyes. “Two turns right and the signs they will lead you” But it’s hard to get lost in this two-road town Though I find myself still searching Hoping that someday I might find myself Between what I lost and where I’m found SOLOS On the day that you left Heaven fell from the sky The stars built a bridge for your journey Such a perfect ending I… still miss you. I still sing to your picture. And I still miss you. Just don’t want to say goodbye.

Little Broken Pieces © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP Little Broken Pieces, all over the ground Words, like diamonds, charm you; they can also cut you down You gotta listen to the spaces, and you read between the lines You keep one eye on the road ahead, but watch out for the other guy Well you thought your feet were planted firmly on the ground And you thought you had your bearings, Now your world turned upside down And you cleaned out all your corners with your anger and your tears But it’s time to raise your light up high, in spite of all your fears (CHO) You’ve got to grab that pony and go Take him on down the road You grab that pony and go See how far you can go SOLOS So you pray to all your angels to look after your soul And you call up all your demons and you tell them where to go There’s a little bit of heaven hidden in this pain There’s a little bit of laughter, you can figure out the game; And there’s a Whole lot of living… left to be gained You’ve got to grab that pony and go Take him on down the road And you ride that pony and go See how far you can go Ride that pony and go, Take him on down the road. And you ride that pony and go… See how far you gonna go. (2x)

No Compromise (Fast, Fast Car) © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP ...As a child, she would walk the streets, waiting for the sun to go down. In that space between the daylight and the dark, She would wait for the first star Her wishing star. Her mama would find things she couldn’t understand. Around her bed, under her pillow Rocks and bones, strings all tied up in knots, Empty jars in the window She was trying to catch starlight Trying to hold starlight. (CHO) All she wanted was a fast, fast car that would take her far And a black guitar, and a long song ...A very long song She never heard of compromise... no compromise. SOLO Now she’s all grown up, you still find her out on the streets. Now she walks in the dark. A full-time job, a man, the babies, they hold her down. She keeps her eyes away from the sky Away from the stars. SOLOS Saturday night, she and her old man, they had a bad one. She kissed her babies goodbye. Grabbed her dreams, got into the car. She let her light out of the jar! She couldn’t live with compromise... wouldn’t live any more lies. All she wanted was a fast, fast car that would take her far And a black guitar, and a long song ...A very long song She wasn’t going to compromise... no compromise.

I Didn’t Know © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP I didn’t know I needed you ’til I heard your song I didn’t know I had no clue ’til you came along I didn’t know that it was you I didn’t know that I was blue, I didn’t know… The melody of your sweet song took me by surprise I didn’t know my life was wrong ’til you passed me by The world outside has turned to grey I’m losing track of night and day, I didn’t know… If I could catch your tune I’d know how the moon It seems to be no mystery; pure love as it ought to be; I didn’t know Solos I’d never known a love like this ’til I caught your eye I’m on the edge of pain and bliss as you walk on by If I had gone another way; if only you had looked away, I didn’t know Oh but you, you went on your way And I, I’m here every day In hopes that you’ll come back this way, and maybe you’ll decide to stay I didn’t know… I didn’t know… I didn’t know… maybe never know… I didn’t know I needed you… I didn’t know that I was blue… Til I saw… and I heard.. and I knew it was so… I didn’t know…

LAZY DAYS – emy phelps © Emy Phelps, MyWindowFacesTheWest Music ASCAP I’ve been thinking’ bout the good old days Hitchin’ a ride through the back roads of my mind And I’ve been dreaming’ ‘bout the good old ways Seems it was a simpler, sweeter time… nickle cones Down at the Rich-Maid ice cream store Now a kid has to pay five bucks Ain’t nothin’ like that drive-thru ‘round here any more! Hey now now, I just wanna Go on back Hey now now, ain’t nothin’ wrong with Lookin’ back no, no After school, down in the sycamore trees Autumn nipping at the summer in your hair Tumbling’ and rollin’ throughout the dry brown leaves In love with life and every moment we could share… cruise the plaza Just lookin’ for a place to park Sweet love Back seat passion found a place in the dark! Hey now now, I just wanna Go on back Hey now now, ain’t nothin’ wrong with Lookin’ back hey now now (2x) SOLOS + KEY CHANGE to BRIDGE These days…all the places have changed and the world seems colder There’s people every where… but it seems we’re whole lot alone-er! Let’s take a lesson from the good old ways Can’t stop the changes but we can draw a line Let’s learn a lesson from the good old ways Starting now, in this moment, right on time. Hey now now, I just wanna Go on back Hey now now, ain’t nothin’ wrong with Lookin’ back hey now now (7x) (Welcome to the lazy days, I get back to the good old ways)

about

Emy Phelps and Darol Anger's first recorded collaboration from 2012 has garnered praise from all over the world.
Ten original songs by this much-beloved singer-songwriter, arranged by Emy & Darol. These are two mature artists at the top of their game, and the amount of care, time, and detail put into this recording shows that. Many of the most accomplished (and now famous) young string musicians who have come up in the New England region are featured, as well as Darol himself, on a generous palette of acoustic instruments.
